Introduction
The purpose of these championships is to give every swimmer a chance to win a gold medal for every stroke. Therefore, if a swimmer has previously won gold in a stroke at any club championship competition, they will not be eligible to swim that stroke at the Novices. A list of Gold medal winners can be found at the bottom of this page.
The Novice Championships are open to every swimmer in the club, Black Hats to Performance, providing that they meet the criteria below.
Please note the change this year, the competition is now being held as age on last day of the championships, 27th March 2011. Therefore, swimmers of 10 years and younger will swim 25m (1 length) of each stroke, all other age groups will swim 50m (2 lengths) of each stroke. For medal presentations the age groups are 8 yrs & Younger, 9 yrs, 10 yrs, 11 yrs, 12 yrs, 13 yrs, 14 yrs, 15 yrs & Older.
There will be no finals; the swimmer who swims the fastest within the ASA rules for each stroke in each age group will be declared the winner. Medals will be presented to the top three swimmers and ribbons to 4th-6th place, for each stroke in each age group.

Notes for parents
Staines Swimming Club Novice Championships take place on Sunday 20th (Breast; Back and Fly) and Sunday 27th March (Freestyle 'Front crawl'; and Individual Medley) at Spelthorne Leisure Centre.
The closing date for entries was 6th March so entry is now closed.
If you submitted an entry form, then all swims are accepted (unless you have received an individual email from me.) A list of entered swimmers will be available to view on the club website by next weekend.
Swimmers are seeded in their races according to their swimming group and age within their group and not by times. This is because we have a wide age range of swimmers throughout the club of differing abilities so this is the best way to ensure that swimmers are comfortable with their heat and swim with other swimmers of the same ability.
However, for medal presentation, these are awarded for the fastest 6 swimmers in each age group, regardless of swimming group. You will therefore need to wait until all the heats have been completed in each event to find out where you came in your age group. For example, if you are swimming in the Breaststroke as a 10 year old, you need to wait until all the 10 year olds have swum breaststroke. Medals are not given out for where you come in your individual heat as you may be swimming against different age swimmers within your heat.
Results will be displayed in the canteen area upstairs and on poolside after each event is completed. Any awards can be collected poolside by your child after each event has been completed.
Parents, please avoid coming poolside during the gala as this is against ASA and Child Protection regulations. We will have CRB checked parents and coaches poolside to assist swimmers with their needs and with making sure that they swim at the right time.
All swimmers should have a drink, towel and t-shirt poolside with them as there will be some waiting around once they are wet. Tracksuit trousers and flip flops are also an option. These clothes and poolside towel will get very wet so please ensure that your child has another towel to dry off with and clothes to wear home at the end of the gala. Everything should be labeled with your child's name.
Please arrive at Spelthorne Leisure Centre between 5.30 - 6pm to sign in for your swims in the foyer. The changing rooms will open at 6pm and the gala will aim to start at 6.15pm with a warm up swim for all swimmers before the racing starts at approx 6.30pm.
You may take photos or video of your child but you must register this in the ASA photography book at the programme table. A sticker will then need to be displayed to show that you have registered to undertake photography. Programmes will be on sale at the top of the stairs at a cost of £2. All monies made from swimming entries and programme sales helps to buy the awards and will be put back into the club.
When your child has finished all their swims, they are free to go home. You do not have to wait until the end of the gala. We will aim to finish the gala by 9pm on each night but this does depend on numbers of entries and how smoothly the gala runs.
NB. If you have not entered the Novices, you will be advised of any changes to your usual swimming schedule in a separate email.
I hope that this covers all of your queries but if you do have any further queries, please email me at meetmanager@stainesswimming.org
